I really enjoyed writing yesterday’s post, Cochlear Implants, Music, Size Queens & Strap-Ons. I hadn’t had so much fun writing in ages. It was rather nice to let Mephisto off the leash, and let him run riot. I admit, I had to reign him, not for fear of tearing shreds off people, but for the sheer perversity that all this talk the implant inspired. All this talk about the benefits of the implant, CLAP-CLAP, PLOPP, SPLISH-SPLASH-TWITTER-BBBRRINGGGGGGGGGGG; heart rending stories of those who were missing out on its benefits, and the rather dubious pronouncements to denying a child is akin to [insert your favourite depravation, or should that be deprivation? Hmm!?], was just pissing me off.
The following quote was edited out of yesterday’s post. It was actually one of the milder passages I wrote that neatly encapsulates the prejudice, negative attitudes towards deafness, and the self righteous assumptions equating hearing with life. If I have to explain it, then the point is lost :

It’s quite OK to be personal. It’s quite OK to share the experience, I am open to that, and I will and I do. BUT, claim it as your own and stop this fucking projection on to Deafies everywhere. The only person suffering is you, NOT ME! But if it makes you feel better, then I will role play. If only for five minutes: “WAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
Now back to the subject at hand, REALITY!
One of the reasons deaf and hearing people have in understanding Deaf anger and reactions to assistive listening technology and research into eugenics, to name two, is the mind block that the hearing world has regarding “disability”. I would go as far as saying there is a resistance to seeing deafness in anyway other way than something that needs fixing. Coupled with some rather sanctimonious attitudes, and the God Mammon dictating the terms of existence, the only respect coming is the middle finger.
But I am merely repeating myself here.
Amidst this maelstrom, there is one question I want answered. “Objectively, what is wrong with being Deaf?”
Without resorting to the usual cliches, it is a simple question, is it not?
Not a damn thing.
